Are Fish Oil Capsules Good For The Skin?

omega 3 fish oil capsules for the skinAbsolutely! Fish Oil Capsules Help Your Skin & Your Brain

Q: I've heard that fish oil capsules are good for the skin because they have omega-3 fatty acids. Is this true?

A: Sure is. There are two main types of omega-3 fatty acids in fish oil capsules. These are docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA).

DHA helps your brain to function properly and EPA helps the skin by regulating the oil production and boosting your hydration. It can also help to prevent acne in some instances. EPA will also delay the obvious signs of aging  by staving off wrinkles – increased hydration means fewer wrinkles.

How good is the EPA in fish oil capsules?

EPA can also help to block the enzymes that eat away at our collagen – those culprits that cause lines and sagging skin. EPA is an antioxidant, it can help protect against sun damage and can even help to repair existing sun damaged skin.

It's also an anti inflammatory, so all those sore joints and inflamed areas in the body will benefit from your consumption of fish oil too – especially the EPA.

Most people don't get enough omega-3 in our diet. You can find it predominantly in oily fish like herring, mackerel, anchovies and tuna. If you're not eating enough of these fish, you may find it beneficial to take a supplement. You want a supplement with at least 180 milligrams of EPA and 120 milligrams of DHA. You can take up to three capsules a day. Some athletes will take up to six per day for the anti inflammatory aspects of fish oil. If you take too many you'll know because you will most likely get the runs from consuming all that oil.
If you're pregnant or on medication, its always best to check with your professional health care provider before taking a supplement of any kind, including fish oil.
